Kim and I had planned to celebrate by spending the weekend with my brother somewhere else in Oregon. With the coronavirus crisis in full swing, that's not going to happen.

Oregonians have been ordered to stay at home with family unless absolutely necessary.

My Philosophy

So, we'll celebrate today with the dog and cats. As I do every year here at Get Rich Slowly, I'm going to commemorate my birthday by sharing some of the most important things I've learned during my time on Earth. These are the core pieces of my life philosophy. I'm no wiser or smarter than anybody else. And I'm certainly no better.

But I am an individual. I'm my own person with my own personal preferences and personal experiences. These have all jumbled together over the past fifty years to give me a unique perspective on life just as you have a unique perspective on life.

To quote my favorite poem :. Much have I seen and known; cities of men And manners, climates, councils, governments, Myself not least, but honour'd of them all; And drunk delight of battle with my peers, Far on the ringing plains of windy Troy. I am a part of all that I have met…. So, these fifty-one nuggets of wisdom are things I've found to be true for me — and, I believe, for most other people.

But each of us is different. What works for me may not work for you.

These beliefs make up the core of my personal philosophy of life. For obvious reasons, some of these notions overlap with the core tenets of the Get Rich Slowly philosophy. Plus, long-time readers will recognize this as an article I update every year on my birthday. Some of these ideas are original to me. Some aren't.

When I've borrowed something, I've done my best to cite my source. We all have something we believe in or some code of ethics that we adhere to. These codes or principles are what define us. They are our essence and they differ from one person to another. The people who share some of these beliefs become our friends and allies in whatever paths we choose to follow. I have my own philosophies in life, which are summarized by the famous quotes below. One of my philosophies in life is to speak less and listen more.

There is a reason why we have two ears and one mouth. Unfortunately, most people do not know when to talk and when to stop talking. People who cannot keep their mouths shut are looked at as arrogant and self-centered and people tend to avoid them. Order My Unique Sample. It is no coincidence that people who seem to get into trouble the most are the ones who tend to talk a lot. You are also likely to burn more bridges talking than when you kept quiet.

Contrary to popular belief that people who are naturally quiet are cowards, maintaining silence is actually a sign of maturity and courage. It is much harder to keep quiet than talking, especially during arguments. Talking actually escalates debates into arguments and eventually into fist fights. Opinions of people who talk less are usually given more consideration than opinions from people who talk a lot.

It is a fact that during discussions, the person who keeps to himself is always given the chance to speak last and everyone is always attentive to listen to them.

Listening is golden. People feel appreciated more when you listen to them. They feel they can trust you and before you know it, they will always want to be near you.

You are more likely to achieve in life when people trust and believe in you, than an untrustworthy person who has all the talent and qualifications. But if you listen, you may learn something new. Thoughts play an important role in molding our behavior. Whatever we believe about ourselves is usually made manifest into our virtual world. When we feed our minds with negativity, we lose the motivation and drive to follow our dreams.

When we register to our subconscious minds that we are the best, we start believe so and this somehow boosts our confidence to do the impossible.

One of my favorite quotes is by Alexander the Great. I realized that people treat you better and with respect when you love yourself and are confident in your own skin. Never put yourself down, because people will gladly ensure that you stayed there forever. When we want something with all our hearts and we focus all our efforts in achieving it, we always get it. The most important thing is that we should be patient enough to allow nature to take its course.

What’s In A Name?

Rome was not build in a day. In the same way, we cannot achieve our dreams by making the first attempt only. If they were that easy, then dreams would not be worth it. Victory is much sweeter when you have to endure a lot to get it. Furthermore, calm seas do not make skilled captains. It is through struggle and failure that we learn about ourselves and life. These lessons are crucial to keep us on top when we succeed.Your complimentary articles. You can read four articles free per month. The topic of personal identity is one that I have in recent weeks really started to take personally. While I have nothing against Mr Rogers or his neighborhood, his show was not one I usually watched as a child — I preferred the more surrealistic world of Captain Kangaroo and his ever-bouncing ping-pong balls. What possible connection could there be between the cherubic, beloved entertainer Mr Rogers and acidic, misanthropic me? It must have done quite well for my namesake, as I continue to be accosted by people wanting to hear more from me about the kindnesses bestowed upon me by the red-sweatered icon.

I was unaware that I was offering such a talk. I went online and there was my full name, Timothy J. Madigan, listed on the program, giving a lecture on the topic of friendship, which sounded like one I might in fact deliver. I did I double-take. Had I somehow offered up a paper without remembering? Had someone sent in my name without my knowledge or permission? Both seemed plausible, if equally disturbing, possibilities. Then I looked at the academic affiliation listed after the name.

It was a school other than my own. It turns out there is a professor of sociology with my full name, whose previous existence had been unknown to me.

My Life Philosophy... What Is Yours?

I am not sure where he stands on Mr Rogers, but I do know that for the first time in my life I started to truly understand the concept of doppelgangers. Double doppelgangers, in fact! Finally I asked the young lass at the counter why there was nothing with my name in the store.

From whence did she get this particular appellation? Well, like many people, I was named after a relative. But in my case this naming was rather unorthodox. Apparently my mother, after having already given birth to two males, was hoping that her third child — namely me — would be a female, and she had only considered female names.

Upon my birth, after no doubt muttering a curse to the angels of nativity, she decided to name me Timothy after her first cousin — Sister Timothy, a Roman Catholic nun. In those days nuns would assume a male name upon taking up the wimple. Pan back to the Irish giftshop.

In desperation, with Delaney now shunning me as a bogus Irishman, and tourists laughing in derision at my distress, I demanded to find out why the good name of Madigan was nowhere to be seen.Turk loses his engagement ring for Carla. Elliot objects to the co-ed locker room at the hospital.
